Castle Teams Run Wild at Thoroughbred Classic

announced April 3, 2015

Last weekend, six Castle high school-aged teams, three girls and three boys, ventured to Saratoga, NY for the Thoroughbred Classic. Five of them made it to the championship game in their brackets and three of them, the 16U and 15U girls and the 15U boys, rumbled home with championships. It was a great weekend for Castle Athletics as Skidmore College was awash in orange and blue.

In only their second weekend of playing together, the teams showed that their practice and hard work paid off. The 15U boys won each of their games handily, using multiple pressing defenses and a running game that pushed their opponents throughout. A height advantage also permitted the Knights to garner rebounds and accelerate down the court. Coach Bill Coston said that "it was great the team play coming through so early in the season. The boys love playing together and that friendship is carrying over to their play on the court."

The girls were equally impressive. Both the 16U and 15U teams have only recently been selected and, with intervening school breaks, this was their first opportunity to put the pieces together and what a great puzzle it appears to be. The girls played aggressively throughout and their defense was stifling. Coach Red for the 15U girls noted that "in all my years of coaching, and there are too many to count, this is the earliest that one of my teams has banded together. The defense was great and they took every opportunity to find the open teammate."

Coach Luck of the 16U girls team was equally effusive. "I did not see this development happening so soon. It was fantastic to watch and see them come together. The season bodes well for the Castle Lady Knights."

Not to be lost was the excellent play of both the 17U and 16U boys teams, reaching the championship game of their brackets. While each succumbed in the final, their play was phenomenal throughout. Also, the 17U girls team played well and just needed a few more points to move forward.

Also, at the Playaz Middle School Spring Fling, the 14U and 13U boys teams did really well knocking off some stalwart opponents and just missing out on knockout play.

This week, the Boys HS teams compete at eh Playaz Spring Fling, while the Boys and Girls Middle School teams take on squads in the ZG One Day Easter Classic.

Happy Holidays!
