Castle Boys Take on the Gym Rat

announced May 28, 2014

This past weekend, Castle’s 14U-17U boys teams traveled to Albany and Saratoga to participate in the Gym Rat Challenge. Competition was fierce and each of the teams showed very well.

The 17U team stormed through its pool, besting Connecticut Elite (58-50), Game 7 Sharks (54-50) and New York Golden Eagles (76-44). In the championship round, Castle was ousted when it fell just short, losing to City Rocks-Black (74-69).

Castle’s 16U team finished 2-1 for the weekend. After rolling over the Newburgh Panthers in its initial game (68-33), the boys went to overtime before pulling out a thriller over the New Jersey Trailblazers (64-63). The team just missed out on the championship round when it was upended by eventual finalist UPLAY Bounce.

The 15U team had a tough draw and it showed with some tough match-ups. After losing their first two games, though, the boys righted the ship and beat up a game City Rocks team (61-47).

In perhaps the most competitive pool play of the tournament, the 14U team went 1-2, losing two games by a combined 4 points. First, Castle took on Stamford Peace in a nip and tuck game throughout. Peace pulled out the win by 1 (31-30), by hitting 2 foul shots with 5 seconds remaining. The boys rebounded quickly, however, and ran all over Vermont United (53-13), allowing only one point in the second half. Then, in another nail-biter, the 14U team succumbed to City Rocks (43-40) when City nailed a three with under four seconds to go. A last ditch three pointer for the tie just missed.

All girls and boys teams pick up this weekend at the Hudson Valley Showdown at Vassar College.
