Castle 9th Grade Earns Bid to Division 1 AAU Nationals Finishing 3-1 for the Weekend

announced April 9, 2013

The weekend started off on negative note with our 1st loss of the season to CT Gladiators on Saturday evening. Sunday with a 6:30am meet up time, we headed to New Haven CT with only 7 players knowing to earn a bid to the DIV 1 nationals we would have to play and win 3 games. Since we were shorthanded, we decided to go with a match-up zone to help save our legs and the guys responded by winning the next two games vs. Connecticut Elite and vs. MPC setting up a match up against North Babylon Bulldogs with the winner earning the bid to the nationals.

Again, we used our match zone defense to confuse the other team and jump out to a 13 point lead at half time. During the 2nd half, we showed signs of being a team that has been playing together for a short time by taking quick and unnecessary shots allowing the Bulldogs back into game. With about a minute left in the game and down by 3 points Nasavin Linen drove the lane and found Vinace Zoungrana for a layup. After a time out, we employed a full court trap forcing a turn over. With about 20 seconds left and now down by 1 point, Mike Laster drove the lane and was foul. He would make both free throws giving us a 1 point lead. The Bulldogs came down and miss. Ruben Coach came up with a big rebound and was fouled. He made both free throws to put us up by 3 and after a Hail Mary shot miss the game was over. Kevin Dennis and Allen Villar did a great job anchoring our defense and rebounding the ball and Kamarthy Evans provided scoring and energy off the bench while Mike Laster led all scorers with 22 points. Our success was truly a team effort from everybody even an assist from the 8th grade coaches as two of our players caught a ride with them to catch the last game which provided us some fresh legs off the bench. The play of the day came in our 1st game when our project Nicholas Dwamena scored his first lay up in his career from an assist from Mike.
